It might be a bug in the driver. You do not give any information
regarding which sound card you have.
The audio on the ALSA seems to look to be much louder than the OSS one.
Do you have the volume controls turned up?

What are you measuring this on. There should be components in the
output that remove any offset.
This might instead be a mic problem.
