can't mute internal speaker on ThinkCentre ALC888

My internal speaker on my Lenovo ThinkCentre A6x has sound even when
speakers are plugged in the jack. Nothing in alsamixer will mute the
internal and allow sound form the speakers plugged into the jack. Sound
either comes out of the internal speaker and plugged in speakers or
sound doesn't come out anywhere.

lspci shows:

Audio device: ATI Technologies Inc SBx00 Azalia (Intel HDA)

alsamixer shows:

Card:HDA ATI SB
Chip:Realtek ALC888

In gnomealsamixer, I don't get any sound unless I click on Headphone.

I just recently upgraded this machine from Debian Lenny to Debian
Squeeze. I have a 2.6.30 kernel. Previous to the upgrade, the sound
didn't work this way. It came out of the plugged in speakers only.

What can I do to make the sound work right?
