ALSA drivers getting deleted every boot cycle!

This is a rather strange one...

I went over to OSS4 for a while, and then came back to ALSA, in my attempts to get audio working properly. Either directly after my return to ALSA or a little while later I find that every time I restart the machine the ALSA drivers are deleted from /lib/modules/ . I rebuild them and reboot and then find that they are gone again. I have been searching for some leftover trace of OSS4 which might be responsible, but I just can't find anything, although I can't think of too many places to look.

I should also add that it is possible that the drivers disappear from /lib/modules much more quickly than this, but that it only becomes apparent on rebooting.

Does anyone else have the foggiest idea? because I don't.
