Try

file /usr/share/sounds/alsa/Front_Center.wav

- it should tell you number of channels among other things,

like this:

"
file silence.wav
silence.wav: RIFF (little-endian) data, WAVE audio, Microsoft PCM, 16 bit, stereo 44100 Hz
".
