Hello, I've recently been trying to switch over to linux from windows. i've had a lot of problems with different linux distros. right now i have installed ubuntu studio 9.04 which i installed from the DVD. everything seems to be working pretty well except my soundcard which is a soundblaster x-fi xtreme gamer. from the forums, i realize a lot of people have had trouble with this card. however, i found that alsa has recently made available a ctxfi driver. i can't seem to install this driver correctly. this is the second time im trying from a fresh install of ubuntu studio. (i don't have a background in computers, so every time i feel like i messed something up and can't go back, i reinstall everything) the first time, i disabled pulse audio first. the driver installed with an error about not being able to insert a symbol in module, unknown parameter. however, when i rebooted, i had sound. it worked pretty well, but the thing is, when i installed it, linux no longer detected my midi piano keyboard. i tried to modprobe snd-usb-audio, but it wouldn't load. and amidi -l did not return any devices. the midi keyboard works when i don't have the ctxfi driver installed. for example, jack will pick it up under alsa tab, and i can use it to input notes in musescore. i was hoping to get both my sound card and my midi keyboard working. when i removed the ctxfi driver, following the removal section on the wiki (http://wiki.debian.org/X-Fi), the midi keyboard comes back to life. this second go around, i did not disable pulse audio. when i installed ubuntu studio 9.04, i made a few changes, but not much. to get JACK working, i created a user group audio and added myself to it. i added to /etc/security/limits.conf the three lines: @audio - rtprio 99 @audio - nice -19 @audio - memlock unlimited here are some other things about my computer before i installed the ctxfi driver: arecord -l **** List of CAPTURE Hardware Devices **** card 0: Intel [HDA Intel], device 0: ALC888 Analog [ALC888 Analog] Subdevices: 1/1 Subdevice #0: subdevice #0 card 0: Intel [HDA Intel], device 1: ALC888 Digital [ALC888 Digital] Subdevices: 1/1 Subdevice #0: subdevice #0 card 0: Intel [HDA Intel], device 2: ALC888 Analog [ALC888 Analog] Subdevices: 1/1 Subdevice #0: subdevice #0 amidi -l Dir Device Name IO hw:2,0,0 UX16 MIDI 1 lspci 00:00.0 Host bridge: Intel Corporation 82G33/G31/P35/P31 Express DRAM Controller (rev 02) 00:01.0 PCI bridge: Intel Corporation 82G33/G31/P35/P31 Express PCI Express Root Port (rev 02) 00:19.0 Ethernet controller: Intel Corporation 82562V-2 10/100 Network Connection (rev 02) 00:1a.0 USB Controller: Intel Corporation 82801I (ICH9 Family) USB UHCI Controller #4 (rev 02) 00:1a.1 USB Controller: Intel Corporation 82801I (ICH9 Family) USB UHCI Controller #5 (rev 02) 00:1a.2 USB Controller: Intel Corporation 82801I (ICH9 Family) USB UHCI Controller #6 (rev 02) 00:1a.7 USB Controller: Intel Corporation 82801I (ICH9 Family) USB2 EHCI Controller #2 (rev 02) 00:1b.0 Audio device: Intel Corporation 82801I (ICH9 Family) HD Audio Controller (rev 02) 00:1d.0 USB Controller: Intel Corporation 82801I (ICH9 Family) USB UHCI Controller #1 (rev 02) 00:1d.1 USB Controller: Intel Corporation 82801I (ICH9 Family) USB UHCI Controller #2 (rev 02) 00:1d.2 USB Controller: Intel Corporation 82801I (ICH9 Family) USB UHCI Controller #3 (rev 02) 00:1d.7 USB Controller: Intel Corporation 82801I (ICH9 Family) USB2 EHCI Controller #1 (rev 02) 00:1e.0 PCI bridge: Intel Corporation 82801 PCI Bridge (rev 92) 00:1f.0 ISA bridge: Intel Corporation 82801IR (ICH9R) LPC Interface Controller (rev 02) 00:1f.2 IDE interface: Intel Corporation 82801IR/IO/IH (ICH9R/DO/DH) 4 port SATA IDE Controller (rev 02) 00:1f.3 SMBus: Intel Corporation 82801I (ICH9 Family) SMBus Controller (rev 02) 00:1f.5 IDE interface: Intel Corporation 82801I (ICH9 Family) 2 port SATA IDE Controller (rev 02) 01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: ATI Technologies Inc Mobility Radeon HD 3600 Series 01:00.1 Audio device: ATI Technologies Inc RV635 Audio device [Radeon HD 3600 Series] 02:00.0 Network controller: Broadcom Corporation BCM4318 [AirForce One 54g] 802.11g Wireless LAN Controller (rev 02) 02:01.0 Audio device: Creative Labs SB X-Fi lsmod Module Size Used by binfmt_misc 18828 1 radeon 358048 2 ppdev 16904 0 drm 124432 3 radeon bridge 64160 0 stp 11268 1 bridge bnep 23168 2 video 29204 0 output 11648 1 video lp 20676 0 parport 50188 2 ppdev,lp snd_usb_audio 108960 0 snd_usb_lib 27264 1 snd_usb_audio arc4 10240 2 snd_hwdep 16904 1 snd_usb_audio ecb 11392 2 snd_seq_dummy 11524 0 snd_seq_oss 42496 0 b43 145064 0 snd_seq_midi 15872 0 snd_hda_intel 557236 2 mac80211 253832 1 b43 snd_rawmidi 33664 2 snd_usb_lib,snd_seq_midi snd_seq_midi_event 16640 2 snd_seq_oss,snd_seq_midi snd_pcm_oss 52352 0 cfg80211 43552 1 mac80211 snd_seq 66848 7 snd_seq_dummy,snd_seq_oss,snd_seq_midi,snd_seq_midi_event snd_mixer_oss 25088 1 snd_pcm_oss led_class 13064 1 b43 pcspkr 11136 0 snd_pcm 98056 3 snd_usb_audio,snd_hda_intel,snd_pcm_oss psmouse 64028 0 iTCO_wdt 21632 0 snd_seq_device 16276 5 snd_seq_dummy,snd_seq_oss,snd_seq_midi,snd_rawmidi,snd_seq input_polldev 12816 1 b43 snd_timer 33544 2 snd_seq,snd_pcm iTCO_vendor_support 12420 1 iTCO_wdt intel_agp 39280 0 snd_page_alloc 18832 2 snd_hda_intel,snd_pcm snd 79432 16 snd_usb_audio,snd_hwdep,snd_seq_oss,snd_hda_intel,snd_rawmidi,snd_pcm_oss,snd_seq,snd_mixer_oss,snd_pcm,snd_seq_device,snd_timer soundcore 17312 1 snd serio_raw 14468 0 dcdbas 16944 0 hid_dell 10752 0 usbhid 47296 1 hid_dell ssb 46980 1 b43 e1000e 137776 0 floppy 78376 0 fbcon 50048 0 tileblit 11264 1 fbcon font 17024 1 fbcon bitblit 14464 1 fbcon softcursor 10368 1 bitblit and no sound. then i follow the ctxfi wiki to install the soundcard driver: http://wiki.debian.org/X-Fi i list the warnings and errors below when i follow the wiki. alsa unload lsof: WARNING: can't stat() fuse.gvfs-fuse-daemon file system /home/raimundo/.gvfs Output information may be incomplete. /sbin/alsa: Warning: Processes using sound devices: 3312(timidity) 3512(pulseaudio).
