audio delays

something in the audio subsystem sometimes causes long 30--60 second delays in
an application

I first encountered this problem with running NaturallySpeaking in wine. The
symptom was that you would dictate text, the indicator would show it has
received audio and then something like 30 to 60 seconds later, the audio would
be recognized. The second time I encountered this problem was when running
virtual box and Firefox at the same time. audio appeared to die and any attempt
to play audio (Pandora) caused an apparent lockup in firefox (page updates ever
minute or so).

ran naturally speaking test this am with the latest wine and pulse audio turned
off. same problem of lockups occurred.

vxi usb mic for speech recognition.
laptop audio used for pandora, hulu audio
OSS emulation for connection to wine
ubuntu 8.10 (back ports turned on)

what else do you need for debugging?
