Tried

arecord -f dat -D plughw:0,3 -d 20 test.wav

and talked into the mic for over 20 seconds and the -d switch never kicked in I guess. When I ctrl-c out, the file was only 1632044 
bytes (8 seconds worth) and it sounded like Alvin and the Chipmunks. But at least I am making progress since I did get sound recorded.

Any ideas what might be going on here?
