Oddly enough, my ATI card sets up much easier (and extremely stable) than my brother's Nvidia, and my sound has worked great since Ubuntu 7.10, on a HDA intel chip. I have full functionality with headphones, externals, mic, and all. I don't recommend my machine (a Gateway MT6451) per se, but it presently works very well, and is quite fast running Ubuntu 9.04. I have upgraded it to 2g RAM, but it is not further upgradeable, which I would like to do for running my VirtualBox XP guest.
