pcm.!default

Hello,  I'm new to the list.  I have a problem with my alsa configuration.

This is my current .asoundrc:

pcm.s71{
   type plug
   slave.pcm "surround71"
   slave.channels 8
   route_policy duplicate

}

From xmms everything works fine, I can hear audio on the 8 channels, but I have to tell xmms to use s71 explicitly.
When I change my .asoundrc to:

pcm.!default {
   type plug
   slave.pcm "surround71"
   slave.channels 8
   route_policy duplicate

}

When I tell xmms to use the default device I cannot hear anything, but no error is displayed either.
The problem is that most of other applications can only use the default device.

I'm using an audigy soundcard with Fedora 11 Beta.   It uses PulseAudio which migth have something to do, but I'm not sure.

Any ideas about the problem are welcome,

Thanks,

Steve
