I have the Slim Devices Squeezebox, which they now call the classic. I'd never go back to a soundcard for playing music on my stereo. I do run their software under linux. The software is open source. It supports FLAC. You can stream on your lan to other devices that don't do FLAC. That is, you store your music in FLAC on the HD, and it can convert on the fly. You can synchronize multiple players (so they say, I only have one). Of course, this is a playback only device. They run specials once in a while to get the price down to $250.

I think devices like the squeezebox and for video the network media tank boxes will always be better than say HTPC since you have the noise making device (fans, hard drive) out of the media room. You can run the slimdevices software via a browser interface, which can also be via a smartphone or PDA as a remote.

So, an even more general question, are there any other sound
"purists" out there, trying to directly use "hw" for bit-perfect
audio? What hardware do you have, what has been your experience,
etc?

Thanks,
Matt
