Hi,
I don't know if it is gentoo or alsa specific, and if it can be related toyour problem, but it was maybe 2 weeks ago, I experimented a strange problemafter a kernel update and the in-kernel alsa driver. It was impossible to getsound from one of my sound card. All was working, the other cards was working, but it was just no sound at all with my audiofile (the second card in myconfig).
The only cure I found was to stop the alsa daemon, remove /var/lib/alsa/asound.state and restart alsa. After that, the sound was working again with this card.
