Fedora recognizes my audio interface but it doesn't work

Hi,

I run Fedora 10 on a Sony Vaio Z laptop. I have a RME Multiface that
connects to the machine via the express32 card bus. Fedora recognizes
the audio interface, the interfaces control panel appears in the
Applications >Sound & Video tab and I can chose frequency etc at will
- there is no error message there. In the Preferences >Hardware
 >Sound >Devices the interface appears (with ALSA in brackets at the
end) as well. However when I click "Test" I get an error message

audiotestsrc wave=sine freq=512!
audioconvert! audioresample!
gconfaudiosink: could not open audio device for playback.

This error persists regardless of sampling frequency.

I have no clue how to go any further. I disabled pulse audio in the
Preferences >Personal >Sessions settings but I wonder if it is not
better to get rid of pulse audio altogether - I heard of conflicts
between alsa and pulse audio. If it is preferable to remove pulse
audio from the system I wouldn't know yet how to do so.

Any suggestion is largely appreciated. I have SELinux disabled.

Best
Jurgen
