is it a permission problem that I can't use my audio interface RME Hammerfall?

Hi,

I'm very much new to Linux and ALSA. I have a new Sony Vaio laptop with a RME Hammerfall Multiface connected to it via the PCIe slot. The system configuration (system/preferences/hardware/sound) does see boh the inbuilt sound card and the Hammerfall box. The internal device works, but the sound card test when I select the RME box fails with the error message

audiotestsrc wave=sine freq=512!
audioconvert! audioresample!
gconfaudiosink: Could not open audio device for playback.

Although this indicates functional problems, it might simply be access privileges that don't allow me to use my audio interface in the first place but I'm not sure. Also, when I check all the options available for my interface the settings of the box (audio sync master, samping frequency etc) list correctly - I have checked the settings before under winXP.

I was reading through the FAQs and I found that I do not have permissions to start with. However the smart answer in the FAQ has it easy because there is a group that has access privileges to the sound device. My permissions read like this

crw-rw-rw-+ 1 root root 116, 13 2009-01-04 01:21 controlC0
crw-rw-rw-+ 1 root root 116,  8 2009-01-04 01:21 controlC1
crw-rw-rw-+ 1 root root 116, 12 2009-01-04 01:21 hwC0D0
crw-rw-rw-+ 1 root root 116,  7 2009-01-04 01:21 hwC1D0
crw-rw-rw-+ 1 root root 116,  6 2009-01-04 01:21 hwC1D1
crw-rw-rw-+ 1 root root 116,  9 2009-01-04 01:21 midiC0D0
crw-rw-rw-+ 1 root root 116, 11 2009-01-04 01:21 pcmC0D0c
crw-rw-rw-+ 1 root root 116, 10 2009-01-04 01:21 pcmC0D0p
crw-rw-rw-+ 1 root root 116,  5 2009-01-04 02:58 pcmC1D0c
crw-rw-rw-+ 1 root root 116,  4 2009-01-04 02:58 pcmC1D0p
crw-rw-rw-+ 1 root root 116,  3 2009-01-04 01:21 seq
crw-rw-rw-+ 1 root root 116,  2 2009-01-04 01:21 timer

so it is all root and I have no shadow of an idea how to chage that.

This is all happening under Fedora 10.

For any advice or pointing to some place where I may find an answer would make me feel much better.

Thanks
Jurgen
