Many thanks, Clemens. The issue was the BIOS, it was a development BIOS with a switchable codec setting, and this was set incorrectly. In my defense I can only say this is the first time I've heard of such an option :). My apologies for consuming your time on a BIOS setting. Responding here primarily such that the solution be searchable if any others should have the same issue.
