.asoundrc on Ubuntu 8.10

Hi everyone
I read the documentation about the ~/.asoundrc and /etc/asound.conf
files on the ALSA project page. I did not have either of the two files
in my installation of Ubuntu 8.04. I created both files and rebooted my
system. After the reboot I tried aplay -L to find out if my ~/.asoundrc
or /etc/asound.conf had worked. Unfortunately no new devices showed up.
For me its seems like the system is ignoring the ~/.asoundrc and
/etc/asound.conf files.
I have now upgraded my system to Ubuntu 8.10, but nothing has changed.
Any ideas what I could do to get my ~/.asoundrc or /etc/asound.conf to work?
Thanks in advance!

Lars
