Thanks for the quick response.  'aplay' works fine and I the issue is 
not with 'mplayer' plays video fine when the '-nosound' option is used.  
This seems to be an issue with kernel module versioning.  I have seen 
many threads on this issue spanning a couple of years but no real solution.
