I've had to set the MIDI port in each application (e.g. kde control centre, xmms, rosegarden). pmidi itself uses the environmental variable ALSA_OUTPUT_PORTS playmidi uses the -a option to send output to the EMU10K1 If using the EMU10K1 wavetable, you need to load the soundfonts e.g.: asfxload /usr/share/sounds/sf2/8mbgmsfx.sf2 (If you don't have the *.sf2 file, a search engine should find it).
