Latest update breaks java app in Fedora

I use a java application which accesses the microphone input of my
soundcard via the alsa mixer to digitize input from a timer device using
javax.sound.sampled.Mixer.

The latest alsa-lib package released by Fedora (alsa-lib release
1.0.17a) makes that application stop working. Replacing the package
with the old version (1.0.16) makes it start working again. I have
access to the java source code, but haven't ever done any mixer
development in any language, much less java.

Any advice on what I can do to help figure out what's causing the
breakage? Anyone else on the list using the mixer via java libraries?
If you can suggest more information that I can supply from my system,
just let me know and I'll offer it up.

Thanks,
e.
