Hi!
   Just ideas:
1. Do you have jack running? (Term # ps-ax | grep jackd)
2. try: term # alsamixer
   and then: term # alsamixer -c 1
   Perhaps your soundcard is not card 0, but card 1.
3. What your soundcards samplerate setting? What your soundcard anyway? 
Perhaps multichannel?
   All I can come up with for the moment.
