Hi, I can't make the alsamixer work. I can't get rid of the message: alsamixer: function snd_ctl_open failed for default: No such device and it seems there is no driver loaded. Some useful info: 1)My soundcard is embedded in my motherboard. My motherboard is a KINO 690 AM2: http://www.ieiworld.com/en/Product_IPC.asp?model=KINO-690AM2 The chip is the alc655 with AC '97 codec, and it is correctly recognized by lspci: 00:14.5 Multimedia audio controller: ATI Technologies Inc SB600 AC97 Audio so there is a Southbridge600 connected to the audio chip, which is a ALC655 2) I followed all the instructions on the Alsa Troubleshooting Page http://alsa.opensrc.org/index.php/TroubleShooting but I always get alsamixer not loading. 3) I also dlownloaded and installed a package from Realtek (basically the latest alsa packages + some shell scripts removing kernel modules) from this page: ftp://66.104.77.130/pc/audio/realtek...-4.06a.tar.bz2 <ftp://66.104.77.130/pc/audio/realtek-linux-audiopack-4.06a.tar.bz2> but nothing changes 4) I still struggle about understing whether I need to load the snd-hda_intel or the snd_atiixp module. Anyway I tried both of them and none works. 5) IF the correct module is the atiixp, I doubt that this driver is not recognizing the SB600 yet: my suspect comes from the insight of the file alsa-driver-1.0.16/alsa-kernel/pci/atiixp.c where I can read: static struct pci_device_id snd_atiixp_ids[] = { { 0x1002, 0x4341, PCI_ANY_ID, PCI_ANY_ID, 0, 0, 0 }, /* SB200 */ { 0x1002, 0x4361, PCI_ANY_ID, PCI_ANY_ID, 0, 0, 0 }, /* SB300 */ { 0x1002, 0x4370, PCI_ANY_ID, PCI_ANY_ID, 0, 0, 0 }, /* SB400 */ { 0, } }; and I don't see any SB600 anywhere. Note that inserting { 0x1002, 0x4383, PCI_ANY_ID, PCI_ANY_ID, 0, 0, 0 }, which could be a possible entry for SB600,changes nothing :-( 6) Some command output which may be useful for you: cat /proc/asound/version Advanced Linux Sound Architecture Driver Version 1.0.16.
