Rereading your first post I see that you -were- accessing the right device with
"-D default:1". I thought you were simply using the wrong syntax.

My thinking is:

Using "default" makes it going through artsd in your case and that is doing the
rate-conversion. 

Using "hw" is more direct. So you could try it with "-f dat" as parameter.  

Sorry, I feel a bit lost here, just guessing...
