Make failure trying to build driver 1.0.16

Following on from Nigel Henry's advice to update my Alsa to 1.0.16 I
downloaded the tarballs, installed the alsa-lib OK (as far as I as a Linux
newbie can see). But then trying to lake the library I ran ./configure OK,
but the make command failed:

$ make
make dep
make[1]: Entering directory `/home/ptoye/ALSA/driver/alsa-driver-1.0.16'
make[2]: Entering directory `/home/ptoye/ALSA/driver/alsa-driver-1.0.16/acore'
copying file alsa-kernel/core/pcm.c
/home/ptoye/ALSA/driver/alsa-driver-1.0.16/utils/patch-alsa: 24: patch: not found
make[2]: *** [pcm.c] Error 1
make[2]: Leaving directory `/home/ptoye/ALSA/driver/alsa-driver-1.0.16/acore'
make[1]: *** [dep] Error 1
make[1]: Leaving directory `/home/ptoye/ALSA/driver/alsa-driver-1.0.16'
make: *** [include/sndversions.h] Error 2
$

so I didn't try any further.

Any ideas what I did wrong?

Peter Toye
