You should try pulseaudio. alsa->pulse plugin works pretty well (at least much better than alsa->jack plugin), a lot of higher-level sound systems, for example SDL and gstreamer can use pulse directly, also pulseaudio steps away really transparently when some application tries to use plughw/hw device directly.
