Soundcard skipping effect on Toshiba L25-S119

Greetings,

I have a fresh install with full updates of openSUSE 10.3. The KDE login sound
works, Realplayer works, but all other applications cause skipping playback or
infinite sample loops. I have had it work completely before, but through
blacklisiting snd_atiixp_modem. Then it reappeared, austensibly because I
installed madwifi, which contains ndiswrapper, as this was reported on some
Ubuntu forums. I have played with all the options listed on the alsa wiki, to
no avail.

You can read more about it here:
http://www.suseforums.net/index.php?showtopic=44791

My question is: How can I have wifi and alsa?

My sound card is reported as:
/sbin/lspci | grep audio
00:14.5 Multimedia audio controller: ATI Technologies Inc IXP SB400 AC'97 Audio
Controller (rev 02)

This appears to be at the driver/codec level, since dmesg occasionally reports:

Jan 21 23:05:21 thingreybox kernel: ALSA
/usr/src/packages/BUILD/alsa-driver-hg20080118/pci/atiixp.c:465: atiixp: codec
read timeout (reg 0)

read timeout (reg 3c)

/usr/src/packages/BUILD/alsa-driver-hg20080118/pci/atiixp.c:465: atiixp: codec
read timeout (reg 1c)

I'm using alsa-1.0.15.hg20080116-1.1

Thanks in advance
