ppc / SUSE 10.3 / alsa problem - sound output stops after few seconds

kernel 2.6.22.13-0.3 ppc

I have struggled to to get any sound out of my Ti powerbook running suse 10.3

At the moment when I start playing something I get audio for a few seconds (say 1-5 seconds
duration seemingly random) and then silence. This seems to affect all the apps I have tried
and the alsaconf sound sample. The application (say amarok) seems oblivious to the problem
and if I stop and start a track I get another 1-5 seconds burst of sound then silence.

The only comment I get in the logs is:

input: PowerMac Beep as /class/input/input18

I tried to compile the latest version of alsa but it wouldn't compile for me.

I also tried with yast but the result is the same.

Amarok only works with the xine engine - the gstreamer one crashes.

I haven't been able to find anything like this on the web and am stuck and don't even know how to go about diagnosing the problem!
Any hints or fixes gratefully received...

Cheers,

SA
