may be you're having sample-rate mismatch problems?

DTS/AC3 streams are usually 48KHz/24bit, while FLAC are most 
often 44.1KHz/16bit (CDDA).

Perhaps your card is set for (or may do only) S/PDIF out at 
48KHz, and you are trying to play a 44.1KHz stream at 48KHz 
without resampling?
