rme hdsp rpm support

hi all

i am a linux user since two years, but i've never managed to fully
support my rpm [1] box from rme.

issue 1)
firmware

in order to get the box running after pluging it to the power, i have to
boot windows, so that the correct firmware gets loaded. as long as the
box stays plugged to the power, i run linux and i can use the audio-box
under linux. however, i can use it only with some restrictions. when i
start 'hdspconf', the all the switches for multiface appear. i can
change some settings on the card, but i have to guess, which switch does
what. also, when i run 'hdsploader' it says:

Card 1 : RME Hammerfall DSP + Multiface at 0x38000000, irq 4
Upload firmware for card hw:1

it misrecognizes my box as a multiface instead of an rpm. also does the
hdspmixer show 18 input channels and 18 output channels instead of 6
each (the first 6 sliders in the input and the output section work as
expected, though).

i don't know how difficult it would be to add native support to alsa for
rpm as well. if it just a matter of no dev having such a box, i'd be
happy to deliver all information that is needed. i assume, making it
work cannot be so difficult, since it is technically already working,
but not officially supported.

issue 2)

i cannot get the card run at higher rates than 48kHz. i tried with jack,
puredata and speaker-test and all of them print similar errors. someone
from #alsa suggested to try the 'plugin' plug instead of the 'hardware'
plug in order to use higher samplerates, but the 'plugin' plug doesn't
seem to work at all here.

- puredata, 44100, hardware:
using mmap audio interface
requested channels=-1 but used=18
playback device with 18 channels and buffer_time 46439 us opened
requested channels=-1 but used=18
(works)

- puredata, 44100, plugin:
snd_pcm_hw_params (input): Invalid argument
snd_pcm_hw_params (input): Invalid argument
output snd_pcm_delay failed: Input/output error
astate 0
audio I/O stuck... closing audio
(doesn't work)

- puredata, 96000, hardware:
using mmap audio interface
requested channels=-1 but used=14
error: Unable to set hw params: Device or resource busy
error: playback device hwparam_set error:: Device or resource busy
requested channels=-1 but used=14
error: Unable to set hw params: Device or resource busy
error: capture device hwparam_set error:: Device or resource busy
error: could not link in and outs: File descriptor in bad state
error: outcard prepare error for playback: Input/output error
(doesn't work)

- puredata, 96000, plugin:
snd_pcm_hw_params (input): Invalid argument
snd_pcm_hw_params (input): Invalid argument
output snd_pcm_delay failed: Input/output error
astate 0
audio I/O stuck... closing audio
(doesn't work)

- 'speaker-test -Dhw:1 -r 96000'
speaker-test 0.0.8
Playback device is hw:1
Stream parameters are 96000Hz, S16_LE, 1 channels
Using 16 octaves of pink noise
Access type not available for playback: Invalid argument
Setting of hwparams failed: Invalid argument

my specs:
i am still running ubuntu dapper, which is quite old. i am using the
alsa-stuff from the repositories. i would like to compile alsa-drivers
(whatsoever is needed) myself, if necessary, but please don't just
advise me to reinstall everything without a particular reason.

please also tell me, if you need some more information.

not that i do understand much about alsa, but if i can, i'd be glad to
help to make the rpm working under alsa. i hope, this won't be too
complex, since it obviously uses the same architecture as the other hdsp
cards.
