That sounds bad-- it suggests that the driver is not properly intialising
the soundcard.

Look in /usr/src/linux/Documentation/sound/alsa/ALSA-Configuration.txt
under the sdn-intel section and see if there are any hints or parameters
you might try to set. The problem is that the manufacturers using the HDA
Intel seem to be in a competetion to see who can produce the most
incompatible implimentations of that sound system.

Why do you have snd_usb_audio? You have I thought an onboard card using the
intel HDA?

Which is here. Which is being used as the default?
How many sound cards do you have or are listed in /proc/asound/cards?
What are the contents of /etc/modprobe.conf?
