I was looking to help someone with sound problems with an Acer Aspire 4720
laptop, and came across a link on Google that showed a lot of problems with
hda-intel on Kubuntu 7.10 (Gutsy Gibbon), and with various machines. there
were a lot of fixes for problems on various machines.

I know it's not an answer to your problem with Gutsy, but I'd suggest
installing Feisty on a separate partition, if you have the space on your
harddrive, and see if you have the same problems. I have Dapper installed,
and recently upgraded from Breezy, but with an Audigy2 soundblaster soundcard
(no problems with that), but there is a plethora of problems with hda-intel
that the Alsa folks are fighting with, and resolving, albeit with a lot of
effort, as each new mobo/laptop/pc with hda-intel presents new challenges.

What is your alsa driver version?
cat /proc/asound/version

And if you do a,
modprobe snd-hda-intel
Does lsmod now show the module as loaded?

Over.

Nigel.
