I followed some of the instructions from this page

Specifically these two lines
sudo rm /lib/modules/2.6.22-14-generic/ubuntu/media/snd-hda-intel/snd-hda-intel.ko
sudo ln -s /lib/modules/2.6.22-14-generic/kernel/sound/pci/hda/snd- hda-intel.ko /lib/modules/2.6.22-14-generic/ubuntu/media/snd-hda-intel/snd-hda-intel.ko
Thanks to Bill for his help, as I wouldn't have got this far without some of his suggestions.
Also 1.0.15 fixed my headphone problem too.

So now I can't even get back to the state I had before with working sound but wrong headphone behaviour. I have tried uninstalling with aptitude and installing again, but that seems to make no difference. I appear to have the correct version of the kernel headers installed.
Anybody shed any light on this for me?
