x The NM256 chip uses the same memory for graphics and sound and isn't
x properly documented. Make sure that the snd-nm256 module is loaded
x before starting X, and playing sounds while starting X might be a bad
x idea.

x Slackware 11.0 should come with ALSA 1.0.11 which should contain the
x latest NM256-related bugfixes, but you might try to compile the latest
x alsa-driver anyway.

Thanks Clemens,

now i'm confused on a higher level. This seems to be a laptop specific
hardware thing. How come the es18xx stuff below works?

# /etc/modules.conf (Linux 2.4 modules config file)
# --- BEGIN: Generated by ALSACONF, do not edit. ---
# --- ALSACONF version 1.0.11 ---
alias char-major-116 snd
alias char-major-14 soundcore
alias sound-service-0-0 snd-mixer-oss
alias sound-service-0-1 snd-seq-oss
alias sound-service-0-3 snd-pcm-oss
alias sound-service-0-8 snd-seq-oss
alias sound-service-0-12 snd-pcm-oss
alias snd-card-0 snd-es18xx
alias sound-slot-0 snd-es18xx
options snd-es18xx isapnp=0 dma1=1 dma2=0 irq=5
# --- END: Generated by ALSACONF, do not edit. ---

lspci says:

Where does nm256 fit into this?

Best regards
