Hey,

try running: speaker-test -c4 -Dsurround40 -t wav
You could also try -Dsurround41, but from your description it seems that 
as far as ALSA is concerned you system is 4.0 rather than 4.1 -- as you 
described it there's no discrete subwoofer input.

Dunno if that'll work, I've only ever played with 5.1, but it could be 
worth a try.
