Dynamically designating default device

Hi, all--

Sorry for the cute title, but there is a serious question behind it.

Here's the deal. I have three physical sound devices:

   1) SiS onboard piece-o-junk

   2) Soundblaster PCI 16

   3) Soundblaster Live! 24-bit USB

I doubt that I'll ever use #1, but I mention it as a possible
complicating factor (though I think I can disable it in BIOS if it gets
in the way too much).

Anyway, what I would like to do is to use the USB device as the default
*when it is available*, otherwise to use the SB PCI card. And I would
like to have that setting done automatically at boot time (or, even
better, whenever the USB box is plugged in or removed--but I don't want
to push my luck too much).

Can this be done? I have seen the ALSA wiki article on "Hotplugging USB
audio devices," but I have a fairly up-to-date system with a 2.6.22
kernel and Udev. It seems like it should be possible to adapt that
method, but I'm not very experienced at writing Udev rules, nor do I
understand how Udev interacts with asoundrc--and I note that the FAQ says:

How does the move to udev with the 2.6 kernels change the
   configuration methods?

     UNKNOWN

:-(

So, any tips would be greatly appreciated. And if by chance my question
is already answered somewhere, feel free to just point me to a URL.

Thanks!
