Sample rate conversion on ICE1712

Hi,

I'm using an ICE1712 sound card and I've run into a problem: I've had to put
a RATE=44100 in the config. I gather that this sound card doesn't support
hardware sample rate conversion, and that this setting forces any
application to make the conversion if the source material isn't in 44100.
Is that right?

I've recently realized that Mplayer and Xine give me different sound
quality, and I'm guessing that their respective sample rate converters
aren't equally good. Mplayer sounds best, but I'd rather use Xine in Amarok
and for movies. I've not been able to improve the quality in Xine.

Can I put in a good sample rate converter in Alsa, so that applications can
just output any rate, and get equally good sound quality? If so, how
exactly should the new configuration look?

Thanks,
Niels
