I confirm that the motherboard documentation says this is possible and you can see in the source of patch_realtek.c for the alsa driver "snd-hda-intel" that the feature is implemented. Can anyone say that the driver is actually patched during install (I'm on Debian Etch amd64)?

Did you try "speaker-test -c 6 -Dsurround51"?

 this gives: Channels count (6) not available for playbacks: Invalid argument


Check alsamixer for any mixer elements that might be relevant also.

I have sliders for pcm and capture,  I can toggle  capture between line and mic, I can set master on or mute.
