Do you need the 2.6.20 kernel? Could you just remove it, or boot your old kernel? Usually there is at least one previous kernel on the system unless you manually remove it. If the card doesn't work with the old kernel that tells you that it isn't the kernel that is the problem, one potential issue eliminated. Have you installed any other software at the time of the problem, in particular a new version of the alsa libraries?
