Please help with ALSA

Hi all,
On my currentl ARM platform,
I've been using the /dev/dsp and /dev/mixer to control and play audio ( and these are the only devices available).
I decided to switch to the libasound using ALSA but I don't know which device to use.

The kernel driver clearly shows it is ALSA based (proc/asound/version also shows this) and not the depreciated OSS.
However, I'm unable to accedd the pcm device.
How do I access this device? Which is is dsp or mixer?
What device should I be using?
Does alsa use either of these at all? i.e the kernel driver is actually OSS.

Thanks very much in advance.

Junior.
