I know at itwas an issue with the 2.6.19 kernel and the alsa-driver package (a search ongentoo forum or bugzilla will show you the details). Maybe you can try a2.6.20 or use the in kernel driver.
It is no need to install the alsa-driver package if the in kernel driver isworking.
