Hard crash when aplaymidi-ing certain files

aplaymidi --port=16:0 song.mid

where 16:0 is an external synth, causes total system lockup (no mouse
move in X).

Also, when xmms plays an mp3 using the ALSA driver, the pitch of the
song is several cents lower than it should be suggesting some kind of
timing problem. (So I use audacious with the OSS driver and it works
fine.) Not sure if this is related to the midi problem.

Any ideas?
