in trouble with USB-Audio - SB Live! 24-bit External

I just purchased SB Live! 24-bit External usb for my laptop. According to alsa
docs I compiled the snd-usb-audio module but I can only get PCM mixer

Output from amixer:

Simple mixer control 'PCM',0
Capabilities: pvolume pvolume-joined cvolume pswitch pswitch-joined
  Playback channels: Mono
  Capture channels: Mono
  Limits: Playback 0 - 100 Capture 0 - 15
  Mono: Playback 59 [59%] [-20.50dB] [on] Capture 0 [0%] [0.00dB]

It works but I have no surround, the sound is choppy, no digital output
(needed for 4.1 home theater system), no other device to switch on, and
strange behaviour (crazy mute/unmute) plugging/unplugging the connectors. I'm
running alsa 1.0.14_rc2 on 2.6.19 kernel, is this normal or I missed
something? Thanks for your help
