Debian testing, KDE and ALSA

Hello.

Need help. Searched and found nothing to help, thanks.

Seems the problems is minor, but I can't find it.

Upgraded Debian testing to latest stuff, including the kernel
2.6.18.

Installed ALSA. When alsoconf is run it kills the kde panel,
does it's
config correctly and exits normally. Log out, log in or restart
restores
the desktop OK but to get the sound to work I need to run
/etc/init.d/alsa-utils
again, otherwise no sound.

Looking for a way to avoid this step to get the sound to run or
find the setting
that is responsible for the no-sound login/startup.
