No sound on digital (spdif) output

Hi,
I'm probably making a stupid newbe mistake but i can't get my digital sound
working. I'm using the alsa drivers included in the 2.6.19.1 kernel and the
sound works with the "regular" analog out.
This is the output of aplay -l

**** List of PLAYBACK Hardware Devices ****
card 0: ICH5 [Intel ICH5], device 0: Intel ICH [Intel ICH5]
  Subdevices: 1/1
  Subdevice #0: subdevice #0
card 0: ICH5 [Intel ICH5], device 4: Intel ICH - IEC958 [Intel ICH5 -
IEC958]
  Subdevices: 1/1
  Subdevice #0: subdevice #0

If i execute:

aplay -D hw:0,0 *.wav

The sound works fine on my analog output, but if i execute:

aplay -D hw:0,4 *.wav

I get no sound at all.

I have went through alsamixer and unmuted the IEC958 outputs. These are my
settings:
IEC958 unmuted
IEC958 P IEC958 Playback AC97-SPSA, unmuted, volume max
IEC 958 P IEC958 Playback Source [PCM]

These are the loaded kernel modules:

snd_seq_oss 33408 0
snd_seq_midi_event 10240 1 snd_seq_oss
snd_seq 50512 4 snd_seq_oss,snd_seq_midi_event
snd_seq_device 10636 2 snd_seq_oss,snd_seq
snd_pcm_oss 41248 0
snd_mixer_oss 18048 1 snd_pcm_oss
snd_pcm 70148 3 snd_pcm_oss,snd_intel8x0,snd_ac97_codec
snd_timer 21764 2 snd_seq,snd_pcm
snd 46948 9
snd_seq_oss,snd_seq,snd_seq_device,snd_pcm_oss,snd_mixer_oss,snd_intel8x0,snd_ac97_codec,snd_pcm,snd_timer
i2c_i801 10764 0
snd_page_alloc 11656 2 snd_intel8x0,snd_pcm
snd_ac97_codec 95268 1 snd_intel8x0

Does anyone have any idea on what might be wrong? Please let me know in that
case because i'm really lost here.

Thanks!

/Peter
