midi setup

Hopefully this is the right place for this, if not please direct me to
an apropriate place....

I'm trying to setup my Suse (10.0) box to act as a soft synth for an
external midi controller. I'm a bit confused about what I need to do
this. I have found various apps for composition, sequencing, etc. but
not great info on what I need and how to put it all together. at a
basic level what I want is when a play a key on the external keyboard
controller the box produces the corresponding pitch and selected
instrument (sent by the control er with midi gs). How do I do this?
what do I need? In basic terms, how can I debug a midi setup to
verify each part is working. Does anyone know of a list that deals
with issues found in the Linux midi studio?

My setup is as follows:

~1GHZ P3, 1G RAM
MIDISPORT UNO USB MIDI ADAPTER
SUSE 10.0 (or 10.2 when released, Debian may also be an option)

I believe I have rosegarden loaded but even when running the keyboard
will not trigger synthesis, and rosegarden seems not to see note info
so this could be a synthesis issue or an issue of interface setup.

Thanks for the help,

Eric
