Upgraded my kernel to 2.6.18-r2 without ALSA drivers and then installed
alsa-driver so that:

cat /proc/asound/version
Advanced Linux Sound Architecture Driver Version 1.0.13.
Compiled on Nov 10 2006 for kernel 2.6.18-gentoo-r2 (SMP).

Still sound only from the right speaker.

Oh well, at least Google Earth now works properly with the new nVidia
drivers in the new kernel!
