No sound on HP dv2000 (dv2058ea) under SUSE 10.1

Hi.  I seem to be having a similar problem to this post from 28/10:

I'm running SUSE Linux 10.1 on an HP dv2000 (dv2058ea), which has a Core  
Duo processor.  Alsa has been upgraded to 1.0.11-32.  Kernel is  
2.6.16.21-0.25-smp.  Audio hardware is

82801G (ICH7 Family) High Definition Audio Controller

Sound worked under Windows XP before I replace Windows with SUSE Linux  
10.1.  There is no sound under Linux, except the system beep, which sounds  
regardless of any audio settings.  I would be very grateful for any help  
anyone can offer on either (i) what is or is not possible with this audio  
setup, and (ii) what further debugging/diagnosis steps I can take.  Thanks  
very much in advance,
