You mean that output of sound worked but input did not? Have you tried
plugging the microphone into both ports? One one of my HP machines, they
midwired the ports.

"I have tried many models" is not exactly clear. What have you tried?

Interesting. Alsa is part of the kenrel. It is probably .12 in the kernel.
Are you sure that you are using .13? What is in /proc/asound/version?

What does 
ls /dev/snd
say?

What happens if you do 
arecord-- do you get output (do ^C to stop it)

The hda is a device which alsa has had a lot of trouble with.
