Oh, it's a shame, the REST interface would be very interesting and useful.
+1.

Admin dashboards are a huge attack surface, while they have their uses they aren’t universally a good idea in many cases. A simple rest API would be far better.
I understand, but we needed a 389-console replacement in Fedora 28/RHEL8, or else we would need to support the java 389-console/Admin Server for another 8 years (or something like that).  So creating a Cockpit UI plugin gets us off of the old console within F28 deadline, and like I said, moving forward we now have the option (without time constraints) to do a full feature standalone Admin Server with REST support.  Just to reiterate we needed to do something "now" so we could get off of the old console.

Note - the Cockpit plugin is not going to be a standalone package, it will simply ship with DS and have its own installer script.  It is very lightweight since Cockpit handles a lot of the workload for us, like authentication, remote host management, etc, etc.

Also, when I said rest389 is abandoned, I didn't mean we don't want to have REST support, but that source repo/project (rest389), is not going to be used anymore for development.  We might use that same name in the future, but the little bit of source code that is already in there will probably just be discarded (except for the JSON reps).
