If using the Mozilla LDAP tools with the latter method, make sure to 
specify LDIF version 1 because otherwise the literal string 
"<file:///path/to/binary/encoded/file" is stored.

changetype: modify
replace: userCertificate
userCertificate:<file:///path/to/binary/encoded/file
