Richard, Thank you for the response. Your suggestion got me pointed in the right direction: An old line in the /etc/hosts was pointing this system's hostname to the ip of the system that used to have that name, so resolution through dns returned the correct answer, but 'files' was specified first in nssearch, and thus the system was using the value from the hosts file.
